Black & White Film

Monochrome emulsions from near-grainless ISO 25 to enormous-grained ISO 3200, plus infrared and orthochromatic responses.

Black and white films differ in two ways that matter: grain structure and spectral response. Traditional cubic-grain films like Tri-X and HP5 give the textured look most people mean by film grain; tabular-grain films like T-Max and Delta trade that texture for smoothness. Spectral response decides how colours become greys — orthochromatic film is blind to red, infrared film sees past it, and the standard yellow, red and green filters shift the balance in between.
