How to choose a film look

Kodak warms, Fuji cools, slide film clips and instant film glows. A short map of the territory so you are not scrolling at random.

Two hundred and ninety-six options is too many to audition one at a time. Almost all of them fall into a handful of families, and knowing the families narrows the choice to a few candidates in about ten seconds.

The first fork: Kodak or Fuji

This is the single most useful distinction in film emulation, and it is easy to see once you know to look. Kodak emulsions warm the midtones, render skin golden and roll highlights off gently — Portra 400 is the type specimen. Fujifilm emulsions cool the shadows and push greens and cyans forward; Pro 400H is the type specimen, and its minty greens are exactly what people mean when they say a photo looks "Fuji".

Put the same portrait through both and the choice usually makes itself. Warm and forgiving, or cool and airy.

The second fork: negative or slide

Colour negative films are low contrast with enormous highlight latitude. They look soft, forgiving and slightly flat — which is why portrait and wedding photography lives here.

Slide film is the opposite: high contrast, high saturation, and highlights that clip abruptly rather than rolling off. Velvia 50 is the extreme case. Landscapes thrive; faces usually do not.

Practical rule: if your photo already has bright highlights you care about, a slide emulation will clip them. If it is flat and needs help, slide film supplies contrast that negative film will not.

Black and white: grain first, then response

Monochrome films differ in two ways. Grain structure splits them into traditional cubic-grain films (Tri-X, HP5) with visible texture, and modern tabular-grain films (T-Max, Delta) that are smoother and cleaner. Spectral response decides how colours become greys: orthochromatic film is blind to red so lips and skin go dark, while infrared film turns foliage white and skies black.

Since a LUT cannot add grain, pair a black and white look with the grain slider in the tool — that is where most of the "film" impression actually comes from.

Instant film: for atmosphere, not accuracy

Instant emulations lift the blacks, compress highlights and add a colour cast. They will not make a photo look better in any technical sense; they make it look like a memory. The expired Time Zero renderings are the furthest end of that.

Cinema print stocks: for video

Print stocks such as Kodak 2383 are the emulsions films were printed onto for projection. They impose the contrast curve audiences read as cinematic, and colourists apply them as the last step over already-balanced footage. Applied to a straight photo they can look heavy; applied to flat, corrected video they are the foundation of most film-look grades.

A faster method

Rather than reasoning it through, use the tool: drop your photo in and every one of the 296 looks renders on your image at once. Press F for the full-screen grid, scan for the three or four that catch your eye, then compare those properly. Judging a look on someone else's sample photo is guesswork; judging it on your own takes seconds.
